Start with the basics of precision farming

Adding CropX’s new machine data feature to the CropX system makes it easy for users to import data from almost any farm machinery for easy management and viewing. All available machine data can subsequently be used in CropX’s Variable Rate Irrigation Tool (VRI) to improve water usage and crop yield

How to get machine data manually into CropX

The machine data inbox is available under the three-line menu in the topbar: Machine Data

CropX’s machine data inbox allows you to manually upload machine data and view it on the map. We support a full range of different file types which are most common in our industry including ISO-XML, CSV, SHP and TIFF (drone images). This means that you will be able to pull in and visualize files downloaded from John Deere and just about anyone else using these common file formats for ag machinery data.

Supported file types:

XML (ISOBUS)

These files can be generated by tractors of various brands that comply with the ISO-11783 standard. This must be a zip file containing a file called “TASKDATA.XML” and one or more “.BIN” files.

CSV
These are plain text files that use a “,”, “;” or tab as separator. They must have an “.csv” extension. As geometric information is required, columns with coordinates must be included. They must be named “lat” or “latitude” and “lon” or “longitude”. The coordinates must use the EPSG 4326 default (degrees). A column with a timestamp can also be included. They must be named “date (yymmdd)” and “time (hh:mm:ss)” or “Timestamp” (i.e. 2018-05-18T11:47:22.234) or “year”, “month”, “day”, “hr”, “min”, “sec”.

SHP

Only shape files containing point data are currently supported. A shape file must be uploaded in a zip file containing all the relevant files (*.shp, *.dbf, *.shx, *.prj).

TIFF

Only specific TIFF files are currently supported. The TIFF file must contain 1 band (except rgb) and the name must contain one of the following strings: “rgb”, “mosaic”, “savi”, “lai”, “ndre”, “dsm”, “ci_red”, “temperature”, “thermal”, “wdvi” or “ndvi”.

The machine data page will give you a list of all imported machine data that is connected to your CropX account. You will also see whether there is overlap with one of your fields and how much measurements are available. You can click and show a measurement on the map.

More advanced options per machine data file are:

  • Delete file

  • Download file

  • Show original file (by default you will only see the overlapping part with a field)

  • Create field (based on circumference of measurements)

  • Go to field (and see machine data in combination with imagery or other spatial data)

Top reasons to bring your machine data into CropX include:

  • Yield analysis. By uploading your yield maps, you can improve your farming practices for a given field by identifying areas that produce less or more (over time) and adapt with site-specific treatments

  • Check on your variable rate performance. Compare variable rate application maps or as-applied maps with in-season imagery showing crop progress.

Scout your fields more precise and get insights in the variety of your fields

The home for analyzing your fields is under Field Data (when clicking on a single Field). Here you will find the best way to browse many kinds of agronomic information all in one place including:

  • Crop type

  • Crop growth (satellite imagery)

  • Soil type

  • Productivity map

  • Sensors

  • NEW! Machine data

In the machine data card itself, you will find an overview of all available machine data that has overlap with the selected field

To better understand differences in yield, growth, or soils you can compare and stack all available field data by using the lock icon in the legend.

Navigate to Points of Interest with the CropX Mobile App

The benefit of using field data on the CropX Mobile App for iOS / Android is that with the GPS on your phone, you see exactly where you are. Once you are in the field, this allows you to walk to a specific point of interest and lookup soil scan properties for places where crop growth is lagging or find the best spot for installing your CropX Soil Sensor.

Use machine data to create prescription maps for irrigation control

Machine data is now available as background layer in CropX’s Variable Rate Irrigation (VRI) tool that allows you to apply optimal water application depth by changing the speed of the pivot per sector. You can set the base rate manually different (per sector) by showing machine data as background layer like a soil scan

The VRI tool can be find under Irrigation (when clicking on a single Field).
