Understanding Vision Readings and Stress Scores
This article explains what CropX Vision measures, how to read the stress score, and how to use Vision data to inform irrigation decisions.
WHAT IS LEAF WATER POTENTIAL?
CropX Vision measures leaf water potential, expressed in bars. Leaf water potential is a direct indicator of how much water stress a vine is experiencing at the moment of measurement.
Think of it like a pressure reading of the vine itself. The higher the bar number, the harder the vine is working to pull water through its system — and the more stressed it is.
READING THE SCORE
At the end of each session, CropX Vision shows your average stress score for that session. Use the table below as a general guide:
Note: Ideal stress thresholds vary by variety, growth stage, and region. Use these values as a general guide and work with your agronomist for field-specific targets.
COLOR INDICATORS
In addition to the numeric score, the CropX Vision app shows a color indicator for a quick visual read — green for low stress, moving through yellow and orange to red for high stress. You can assess the vineyard’s status at a glance without memorizing exact numbers.
HOW TO USE VISION SCORES OVER TIME
A single reading tells you the vine’s state right now. A series of readings across the season reveals trends:
• Compare readings before and after irrigation — did stress drop as expected?
• Compare readings across blocks — are some areas consistently more stressed?
• Track the season — is stress building gradually as the growing season progresses?
CropX Vision is most valuable when used consistently. The more sessions you take, the more context you have for every decision.
